The Museum of Canarian Emigration is one of the most significant cultural edifices in Teguise by force of the topic it covers. However, the edifice is, above all, important due to the structure hosting it, namely, El Castillo de Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara Castle), also referred to as El Castillo Guanapay (after the Guanapay mountain, where it is located). Built during the 16th century, this castle served as watchtower against pirate attacks and to a military end for a long time (until the 1950s), but as from 1991 it has been hosting the abovementioned museum.
